Mt. Etna in Sicily is a unique winegrowing area that has gotten a lot of attention recently.
Its dark volcanic soils, high elevation, snow on the top of the mountain for five months of the year, and near the Mediterranean Sea create unique wines.
The vine themselves are also unique to the Mountain, the reds Nerrello Mascalese and Nerrello Cappuccio and the white Carracante. The black volcanic soil is inhospitable to the insect phylloxera.
There are pre phylloxera vineyards over 150 years old on Etna. We have a wine, Signum Aetna Rosso Riserva from such vines.
We have two wineries from M Etna. Firriato and Al Cantara. Great unique wines.
