Castello Vicchiomaggio Winery in Tuscany

The Matta Family, Castello Vicchiomaggio Winery

Castello Vicchiomaggio is a 140-hectare (346-acre) wine estate situated between the cities of Florence and Siena in Tuscany. It falls in the center of the Chianti Classico zone, and makes a range of wines from the DOCG, as well as a collection of Maremma Toscana and Toscana IGT wines.

The stone tower at Castello Vicchiomaggio dates back to the 1100s and the castle, then known as Vicchio of the Lombards, was first recorded in official documentation from the 15th Century. The castle was an important defensive fortress in the Middle Ages due its strategic location close to the town of Greve in Chianti. The name Castello Vicchiomaggio was adopted during the Renaissance period in tribute to the Maggiolate of Calendimaggio. During its long and elaborate history, Castello Vicchiomaggio has played host to a range of noted historical figures, including Leonardo da Vinci.

Today, Castello Vicchiomaggio comprises a total of 33ha (82 acres) of vineyards and 10ha (25 acres) of olive groves. Sangiovese is by far the most abundant grape variety in the vineyards and is complemented by native grape varieties like Canaiolo and Colorino, as well as international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are planted on south-facing slopes to ensure maximum sun exposure for optimal grape-ripening.

Grapes are harvested by hand, pressed, and then transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to ferment for 12-15 days. The fermented juice is then filtered to remove the grape skins destined for grappa production. After filtration, the juice is placed in stainless steel tanks for the commencement of malolactic fermentation. Depending on the style of wine, aging can last from 8-24 months in French oak barriques and barrels.

The Matta family owns and runs the estate. They have agro Turismo units to rent and stay there along with a restaurant, swimming pool, and the best view of Tuscany.

A Must see and stay at Estate, Their wines are among the Best in Tuscany and the world.
