Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the three great Tuscan wines made from the Sangiovese Grape. The other two wines are Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino.
All are designated DOCG, the highest on the Quality pyramid.
The name Vino Nobile di Montepulciano literally means Nobile Wine from Montepulciano.
The wine can only be made from grapes grown around the town of Montepulciano. Montepulciano is a Hill Town in Tuscany south of the town of Sienna. There is a grape Montepulciano di Abruzzo meaning Montepulciano from Abruzzo.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano must be at least 70 % Sangiovese and can be 100% Sangiovese. The wine must be aged at least two years before release and one of those years must be in oak.
The production of Vino Nobile is Controlled by the Consortio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano which is comprised of all of the producers.
