A Great Wine
Ciao Daniel
Volcanic in character, balancing power with elegance.
Likos 2021 is a southern Italian red made from 100% Aglianico, one of Italy’s most powerful and age-worthy grapes. It comes from vineyards on the slopes of Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano in the Basilicata region, whose volcanic soils give the wine its structure and mineral character.
Region & Terroir
Appellation: Aglianico del Vulture DOC
Region: Basilicata, southern Italy
Vineyards: Around the villages of Barile and Rapolla on volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture.
Soils: Volcanic tuff and mineral-rich earth that add depth and complexity to the wine.
Grape: 100% Aglianico — often called the “Barolo of the South” because of its firm tannins, structure, and aging ability.
Winemaking: Typical production methods for this wine include:
Fermentation: At controlled temperature for about two weeks
Aging: Partly in French oak barriques and additional time in bottle before release.
Taste & Aroma
Aromas: cherry, blackberry, licorice, and spice
Palate: full-bodied, structured, and intense with firm tannins
Finish: long and persistent with savory and mineral notes.
With age, the tannins soften and develop more complex notes such as leather, dried fruit, and earthy spice.
Food Pairing: This style pairs best with rich, savory dishes, including grilled or braised lamb, roasted meats, hearty pasta with ragù and aged cheeses.
