Santenay, 2022 Clos des Hates Red by Bachey Legros
$62.00
Regular price $44.00Clos Des Hates Vineyard, next to 1st Cru
This is a 100% Pinot Noir from Santenay in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, and it comes from Les Hâtes, regarded as one of the finest
village-level terroirs in Santenay. The vines used for this cuvée were planted in 1935, giving the wine impressive concentration and depth.
Clos des Hâtes is technically Santenay Village, not Premier Cru, but the vineyard sits among Santenay Premier Cru sites and is widely considered very close in quality and character to 1er Cru.
Aromas: ripe strawberry, cherry, black cherryb and floral notes, with earthy and spicy nuances.
Palate: medium-bodied but concentrated, with ripe red and dark fruit, excellent freshness and a distinctly mineral character.
Tannins: noticeable but silky and refined, giving the wine structure without making it harsh.
Finish: long, round and savory, with a touch of earthy Burgundy character.
The 2022 is particularly attractive because the vintage gives the wine ripe fruit and a velvety texture while retaining freshness.
Winemaking: The wine is made with a relatively gentle approach: cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by fermentation and post-fermentation maceration. It spends about 14 months in oak, including approximately 25% new barrels.
14% Alcohol BV
Pairing: This is a great Burgundy for duck, roast chicken, pork, grilled or roasted red meats, game, mushroom dishes and moderately aged cheeses. Serve around 16–17°C (61–63°F).
This is a serious, old-vine Santenay Pinot Noir—more powerful and structured than a delicate Burgundy, but still showing the elegance, red fruit, earthiness and minerality that make Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir so appealing. It should be especially attractive to customers looking for “Premier Cru character without the Premier Cru price.”
