Fattoria La Gerla Montalcino Winery | Tuscany
The La Gerla Estate is considered one of the Best Brunello wineries. La Gerla makes traditional Brunello meaning Elegant well balanced. They make their Brunello in large oak to create more elegance. The exception is their Burba that is made in Barrique.
The estate is exclusively planted to the Sangiovese grape variety and makes a portfolio of Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and Toscana IGT wines. Sergio Rossi purchased the estate from Biondi Santi in 1976 and to this day it is still owned and run by the Rossi family.
The estate consists of six vineyards planted between 1976 and 1998: La Gerla, Gli Angeli, Mercatale, Oliveto, Piano and La Pieve. Collectively, these vineyards cover 12 hectares (30 acres) of land and produce 75,000 bottles of wine per year. Half of the vineyards are located in Canalicchio, while the remaining vines are planted in nearby Castelnuovo dell'Abate.
La Gerla's flagship wine is a single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Riserva gli Angeli. The grapes are sourced from the estate's prized Vigna Gli Angeli vineyard, or "Vineyard of the Angels", which was first established in 1976, making it La Gerla's oldest vineyard. The wine ages for five years prior to bottling, with four of these, spent in Slavonian oak. Once bottled, the wine is cellared for 14 months before release.
Their is a must for serious wine cellars.
